Sweden's Sebastian Hohenthal set the quickest lap time in free practice at Donington Park on Saturday morning. The 24-year-old led the way in the half-hour session with Serbia's Miloš Pavlovic the second best performer. Russian Mikhail Aleshin achieved third spot ahead of qualifying for both Sunday races later this afternoon.
Aleshin and Pavlovic led in the early stages, before Brazilian Carlos Iaconelli moved into second. Kazim Vasiliauskas and Hohenthal were also running well, whilst Tobias Hegewald spun at Goddards. The German had set the eighth fastest time up to that point - fortunately he was able to recover from the spin and later improve up to sixth position.
Midway through the session, the majority of drivers came in to change tyres. Championship leader Andy Soucek was in a lowly 23rd position having only completed three laps, whilst Pavlovic improved to head the times - the top 14 drivers were separated by just 0.871 seconds.
Iaconelli then ended his session after going off on the entry to the Craner Curves, shortly before Pietro Gandolfi spun at the final turn. Jens Hoing was the next driver to make a mistake, the young German made contact with the barriers after spinning off at Coppice.
Several drivers made improvements in the later stages and it was Swede Hohenthal who hit the top with only six minutes of the session remaining. Soucek had also made his move - rising to fourth behind Pavlovic and Aleshin respectively.
With a raft of changes expected, Tobias Hegewald then lost control at Coppice with just three minutes remaining and was left stranded by the side of the track. With the car stationary in a dangerous position the Stewards called for the session to be red flagged, just as Kazim Vasiliauskas also went off at the same corner.
