Spain's Andy Soucek registered the fastest lap time as Formula Two returned with a test session at Donington Park on Tuesday. Ahead of this weekend's rounds at the Derbyshire venue, Soucek set the pace from Serbia's Miloš Pavlovic as Frenchman Julien Jousse rounded out the top three.

There was a melancholy atmosphere at Donington on Tuesday as F2 hit the track for the first time since the loss of Henry Surtees at Brands Hatch on 19 July. With just under four hours at the drivers' disposal, Soucek ended the day on top with a best effort of 1.23.053.

Pavlovic's second place was just under three tenths of a second down on the championship leader with Jousse over half a second slower in third. Italy's Edoardo Piscopo finished up fourth, only 5 thousandths of a second slower than Jousse having led the way on the timesheets earlier on in the session, as Romanian Mikhail Aleshin completed the top five.

The positions in the second half of the top ten were filled by Iaconelli, Hohenthal, Bortolotti, Jason Moore and Vasiliauskas, the latter of which was just over three quarters of a second slower than the best lap time. Other than Moore, British drivers Jolyon Palmer and Alex Brundle finished the day in 12th and 13th positions.

There was disappointment for Tobias Hegewald, Robert Wickens and Philippe Eng (4th, 2nd and 3rd in the championship respectively) who wound up in 11th, 14th and 15th places. The weather remained satisfactory at Donington Park for the duration of the practice period, although Germán Sánchez, Pietro Gandolfi and Tom Gladdis were all spin victims.

The first free practice session for this weekend's ninth and tenth rounds of 2009 will begin at 9:50am local time (BST, GMT +1) on Saturday.
