Jolyon Palmer has shared his feelings following the loss of friend and fellow competitor Henry Surtees at Brands Hatch two Sundays ago. Surtees died in a London hospital on Sunday 19 July after being hit in the helmet by a flying wheel during Brands Hatch's second race.
'I have known Henry since we were both 13 year olds karting. I can still remember him now, going through karting data in the Surtees motorhome, and I was always so impressed at just how technical he was. I then first raced in cars against Henry when he competed in a one off T Car race at Brands Hatch in 2005. It was clear then that he was a very capable driver in what I think was his first car race and he was competitive even against people in their second season.
This year Henry had really shone and it was only on the Saturday night before he died that I said I thought he was one of the most impressive drivers in the series so far, and certainly the best performing British driver, having showed great pace at some point in every race weekend of the season so far.
On Sunday morning I happened to be sitting with Henry at the autograph session and we were chatting and joking. As well as being very talented and focussed he was also such a lovely guy and I feel so privileged to have known him. It seems unreal to me that an accident like this can happen to someone so close to me.
My profound condolences go to Henry's family; I cannot imagine what they must be going through at this moment in time. John and Jane can be extremely proud of their son. He was an outstanding racing driver and a brilliant person who so many of us looked up to. It has been a privilege knowing you Henry and you will always be remembered.'
