'He will be deeply missed'

20 July 2009

John Surtees has released a statement after the death of son Henry in Formula 2's second race of the weekend at Brands Hatch on Sunday. Henry, 18, passed away in a London hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the accident which saw him transported by helicopter from the Kent track.

On the exit of Westfield curve, Surtees - son of the 1964 F1 Champion - was directly struck on the helmet by a flying wheel following an accident for Jack Clarke just moments before. Immediately knocked unconscious, Surtees' car left the track before coming to rest after a collision with the barrier at Sheene corner.

An official statement from John Surtees reads as follows:

'Henry had followed his heart from the time he first sat in a kart. He treated seriously the balance between motorsport and school, having just finished his A-Levels. The world beckoned and he was thriving on the freedom to concentrate on his motorsport.

Despite bad luck in his motorsport, he had shown himself to be one with the possibilities of reaching the very top. Despite his young age he had shown maturity, technical understanding and speed.

Most importantly he was a nice person and a loving son and brother. He will be deeply missed.'
