Hegewald still on top in Belgium

Germany's Tobias Hegewald has continued his fine start to the Belgian weekend of the championship by keeping up his leading pace in the second timed practice session. Alex Brundle climbed from third place in the first session to second as Julien Jousse rounded out the top three ahead of qualifying in the late afternoon of Friday.

Behind leader Hegewald, Brundle's day was not completely trouble-free as the leading British driver's car stopped shortly after the crest of the hill at Eau Rouge, due to transmission problems; as a consequence, the second half-hour session of the day was brought to a brief stop as the red flags flew.

As Brundle set his best time barely 60 seconds after Hegewald, Andy Soucek - winner of the most recent race in the Czech Republic last Sunday - slotted into fourth place behind Frenchman Jousse.

Russia's Mikhail Aleshin dropped to the bottom of the top five, having been second in the morning, although free practice came to an abrupt end for the 22-year-old who spun before suffering a rearward accident at the second part of the Paul Frere (formerly Stavelot) corner, fortunately damaging only the car.

Milos Pavlovic was sixth ahead of Henry Surtees, who was eight tenths down on leader Hegewald, with Rob Wickens, Philipp Eng and championship leader Mirko Bortolotti completing the top ten ahead of qualifying.
