Tobias Hegewald has rounded off a superb first day in Belgium by claiming pole position for the weekend's first race on Saturday. The German driver, also fastest in both practice sessions, lines up alongside Spain's Andy Soucek with Robert Wickens well placed to take the championship lead. Henry Surtees is the leading British driver in sixth.
Having been on top of both of the practice sessions at the world-famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit, Hegewald's best lap of 2.08.890 saw off the to grab the top spot by just under a tenth of a second from Spaniard Soucek, who took victory in the second race at Brno last Sunday.
With Rob Wickens third and currently one point behind championship leader Mirko Bortolotti, the Canadian starts an enormous twenty places in front of his rival and is therefore best placed to inherit the lead in the standings. Sweden's Sebastian Hohenthal will start one place behind Bortolotti after experiencing an issue and coming to a halt at Eau Rouge, which resulted in the temporary deployment of the red flags.
Frenchman Julien Jousse, who had held the top spot until the stoppage, eventually fell back to fourth as Lithuania's Kazimieras Vasiliauskas enjoyed qualifying in the top five, heading the third row of the grid from leading Briton Henry Surtees.
Mikhail Aleshin's car proved to have sustained too much rear-end damage from its Paul Frere Curve crash in second practice, leaving the Russian without a time and therefore at the back of the grid in 25th place.
The first race of the weekend will get underway at 12:15 local time (BST +1 / GMT +2) at Spa on Saturday, following the morning qualifying session which will decide the grid for the weekend's second race on Sunday.
