Tobias Hegewald has set the leading pace in the first practice session of the weekend in Belgium. The German posted the quickest lap time of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit on Friday morning and leads the way from Russia's Mikhail Aleshin with Alex Brundle, the leading British contender, in the top three.
As the third weekend of the new-look F2 championship gets underway, 19-year-old Hegewald - who, like the rest of the drivers, is working with a different engineer each weekend - topped the timesheets with a best effort of 2.10.110, almost half a second up on the second-placed man.
Spain's Andy Soucek, winner of the second race in the Czech Republic last weekend, was fourth ahead of Carlos Iaconelli. With Jousse, Pavlovic and Canada's Robert Wickens behind them, there were eight different nationalities filling the first eight places.
Whereas Hegewald's ultimately quickest time was set with 20 minutes of the session still to go, the other drivers exchanged places behind him as car setups were adjusted in the pit lane. Second Briton Henry Surtees finished ninth fastest with compatriots Jack Clarke and Jason Moore running in tandem in 11th and 12th. Tom Glassis was 14th quickest with Jolyon Palmer the final British driver, seven places further back.
Championship leader Mirko Bortolotti was only 15th quickest of the 25 cars and has work to do heading into second practice and qualifying later on Friday afternoon.
