Hegewald hoping for better luck at Brno

03 June 2009

Tobias Hegewald was unlucky to leave Valencia without scoring any points, and the German driver is hoping for an upturn in fortunes at the next F2 round in Brno.

The 19-year-old was running a strong fourth in Race One until a collision with Andy Soucek - whose car slowed on the exit of Turn 12 - forced him out of the race. "It was a racing accident, not anyone's fault," Tobias reflected - "a case of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Tobias did however admit he had been buoyed by his strong pace over the weekend. "I was fast in practice and first qualifying," he explained, "and starting Race One in second position was pretty encouraging. Hopefully I can work with that in Brno and be similarly quick there.

"In Race Two I started 12th, and despite progressing through the field it was not easy to overtake because everyone was so evenly matched - it is hard to force drivers of this calibre into a mistake. I think there will be more overtaking at Brno, but it will still be difficult. That means qualifying will be very important, as it can really set you up for a good or bad weekend."

Tobias has previous experience of the Brno circuit, but insists he will not be putting pressure on himself to get a result: "I've raced at Brno before, although it was many years ago," he stated. "Like I said at Valencia I'm not making predictions before the race - hopefully I can perform well in qualifying and just see how it goes from there."

Between races Tobias is still at school studying sports, and he admits it can sometimes be hard to strike the right balance between work and racing. "It can be hard sometimes for sure - last year for example I competed in 34 races, so I was away quite a lot. It's important to unwind a little, so I'll probably give myself this week off following Valencia, and leave thinking about Brno until next week.

"That said I'm always training physically, and I do a lot of running and gym work to ensure I stay in good shape. As proved in Valencia points are hard to come by, and it's all for nothing if you finish 9th or 10th, so it's very important to stay in shape. I'm not putting pressure on myself, but Brno will be an important weekend for me - hopefully I've left my bad luck behind me in Valencia!"
