Palmer: "This weekend has been hugely significant"

01 June 2009

MotorSport Vision (MSV) Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer has spoken of his sense of pride following a successful inaugural weekend for the FIA Formula Two Championship in Valencia, Spain.

After an impressive double victory for Canadian driver Robert Wickens in the opening two rounds of the 2009 season, Palmer said: "First of all my congratulations to Robert - he's done an outstanding job.

"This weekend has been hugely significant I think, for us as MotorSport Vision but also for motor racing in general. The challenge of producing a European championship with 25 cars - all of which have 400bhp and adhere to the 2005 FIA Formula One safety standards - has been very demanding.

"I'm extremely proud of my team and everybody involved in making it happen. Williams in particular have done an outstanding job and we're delighted to have them as a partner in the program."

A testament to the success of the opening weekend was confirmed with 100% reliability for all 25 cars during yesterday's (Sunday) race: "I was very proud to see all the cars here for the first Formula Two race in 25 years, and I think there will be some great racing over the year," said Palmer. "Our first weekend's performance has been extremely strong, but there should be no doubt that we are determined to make it better - we've still got performance improvements to come with the car and the tyres that will develop through the year. The key for the whole championship is to provide these youngsters with the chance to showcase their ability and to try and prove they should be getting into Formula One."
