Andy Soucek has high expectations of becoming the first Formula Two winner in the championship's returning season this weekend, having set the fastest time opening practice time in Valencia on Friday. If the Madrid-born driver goes on to win the first race on Saturday, he will be the first man to take victory in an F2 car since Philippe Streiff at a soaking Brands Hatch in 1984.
A lap time of 1.27.800 lead the way for the morning session in Spain as Soucek completed twelve laps of the Circuito Permanente de Ricardo Tormo. "I just pushed for one lap initially and the time came quite easily," said Soucek, who is tipped as championship favourite by many.
"On the second lap I went another tenth quicker - I'm feeling very happy. It's the first official session in the championship; it still doesn't determine how the race will go but it's good to be at the front." The second practice will be getting underway at 1:30pm local Spanish time (GMT +1).
