F2 Launched at Brands Hatch

03 March 2009

The Formula Two car was series launched to the world at Brands Hatch yesterday by MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer. Under the watchful eyes of Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head, the car took to the track for the first time with BTCC driver Steven Kane at the wheel.

Following the unveiling of the car to the media and on-track presentation, the Williams team founders spoke about the launching of the new Formula with Jonathan Palmer: "I think with 450bhp the car will need respect as well as skill," commented Williams. "People will now be looking at two streams into F1 with F2 as well as GP2."

Patrick Head, the man behind the development of the new car as well as so much success for Williams in Formula One, discussed the technical aspects of the new racer: "It was quite a challenge to design a simple car with good performance. We didn't want the car to be too complex, not too expensive, but to produce quite a lot of downforce. It looks nice and I am sure it will be a good car for the championship."

Palmed concluded: "The car looks and sounds fantastic and Williams have done a great job. I don't think any other championship can boast the same demand from drivers as we've had in such a short space of time, particularly in its first year. To have all twenty four slots filled so quickly is excellent and F2 will give all these drivers the chance to prove their skill against each other on a level playing field, and help them towards their aim of racing in Formula One."

The series kicks off in Valencia on 31 May and will travel to four other countries before finishing in Barcelona on 01 November.
